Local law firm serves up
donations for Relay for Life

It's not every day you have a law office serving you lunch. But that
was the case Friday afternoon when attorneys and staff from Rochelle,
McCulloch and Aulds seated customers and cleaned tables at Michael's
Cafe in Lebanon to raise money for Relay for Life cancer
research. This year the Relay For Life of Wilson County will
be held June 24, at the Stroud Gwynne Field, on Castle Heights Avenue
in Lebanon.
Matthew Ryan, a real estate attorney with the firm, was greeting
customers at the door and explaining to them that all the tips given to
the waitress, also from the firm, would be donated to Relay for Life.
Tina Dyer, Renee Thorne and Vicki Jarvis were among the Rochelle,
McCulloch and Aulds personnel assisting customers and clearing tables
for tips for the cause.
"It's going great, and it's for a great cause," said Dyer.
"Everybody's being very generous," Thorne agreed. "People can relate to
the cause and we're getting very good tips."
Jarvis was assisting a woman who described herself as a 28 year cancer
survivor. "It's wonderful. We've had great tips," Jarvis said.
Harlynn Bryan, was too busy stuffing her 16 month old mouth with greens
to comment on the fundraiser, but her dad, Steve wasn't. "I love
Michael's Cafe," he said. "Helping Relay for Life is just a bonus."
Jerry and Eva Hunt were eating with Fred Burton during the
event. "We eat here just about about every day," Jerry Hunt
said. "We'll give a pretty good tip."
Ryan said helping out with lunch wasn't the only thing his firm does to
benefit Relay for Life. "We have taken part in the past. Also, this
year, from January to June, we will be donating $50 from every real
estate closing to Relay for Life. We're over the $2,500 mark in
donations," he said. "It's good to see each other out of the
office." Ryan added his firm would be doing the same thing at
Panera Bread in about a week.
Relay For Life is an overnight event designed to celebrate survivorship
and raise money for research and programs of the American Cancer
Society. During the event, teams of people gather at schools,
fairgrounds, or parks and take turns walking or running laps. Each team
tries to keep at least one team member on the track at all times. Relay
For Life (often shortened to Relay) is the main volunteer-driven cancer
fundraising event of the American Cancer Society. Originating in the
United States, the Relay For Life event has spread to 21 countries.
Relay events are held in local communities, campus universities,
military bases, and in cyberspace.
Although the main objective of Relay is to raise money for cancer
research and cancer patients, the event is held to spread cancer
awareness, celebrate the lives of survivors, remember those who lost
their lives to cancer, and unite a community in the fight against
cancer. It is estimated that Relay For Life events have raised over $3
billion to date.
